What will happen during my MOHS surgery?

There are several stages involved during a MOHS surgery that will require you to wait between each. A local anesthesia will be injected into the area that is being treated in order to keep you comfortable throughout your surgery. Your surgeon will then us a scalpel to remove a thin layer of cancerous tissue. This tissue will then be evaluated by our lab to determine the extent and location of cancerous cells remaining beneath the skin. This process will continue until no cancer cells are detected. MOHS surgery offers a comprehensive treatment in one appointment, but your surgery may take up to several hours, depending on how many attempts are required to completely remove cancerous cells. What kind of results do most patients experience after MOHS surgery?

Depending on the depth of the wound once your surgery is complete, your provider may suture it closed or leave it open to heal. You may wish to discuss a skin flap or graft to improve the appearance of your MOHS surgical scar, though this may require a separate procedure and many patients do not find it necessary depending on the location or extent of the wound. MOHS surgery provides up to a 99% cure rate for cancer that has not been previously treated and up to 94% for recurrent skin cancer. These cure rates go well beyond other treatment methods, making MOHS surgery the best option for many patients. Patients whose wounds are small enough to be left open will require approximately 4-6 weeks for healing. If you require stitches, you may need to schedule a follow-up appointment for removal. Even after your MOHS surgery is complete, there is always a chance that skin cancer could recur at a later date. Patients should be diligent about scheduling annual skin check-ups with their dermatologist, so any issues can be diagnosed as early as possible.
